Nitish Kumar, an engineer from Bihar College of Engineering by education, comes from the socialist movement and belief system developed under an array of prominent leaders Jayprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, S N Sinha and Karpuri Thakur.
Coming out of the J.P. Movement which ran from 1974 til 1977 he was close to S.N. Singh a prominent figure in the movement. Nitish Kumar was the union minister for railways and Minister of Surface Transport under National Democratic Alliance PM Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee. Taking the responsibility of Gaisal Train Disaster he resigned, but during that brief tenure he introduced the Tatkal scheme and is credited for an opening of a record number of ticket counters.
Nitish Kumar is the current chief minister of Bihar and has held important cabinet positions over last two decades.
